More than just da

By Mommy

We’re not quite at 15 months with Rowan, but he’s taking things in like a sponge.  These are some of the things he can identify, at least in certain contexts:

Cup, spoon, straw, chair, table, cat, book, chandelier, crib, blue curtains, butterfly, laundry basket, dishwasher, door, stroller, bus, telephone, telephone booth, tree, bird, dog, table, spider, cow, airplane, plate, ear, shirt, spiral staircase, mirror, streetlamp, light, up, down, sheep, circle, head, foot, shoes, paper, and fingers.

He knows what to do if I ask him to close the door, push the dishwasher door up, please give x to me, put y in the bin, and go to Daddy.

“Where’s Daddy” to Rowan means stop whatever he’s doing and look expectantly at the door to see Daddy coming home from work.  The word for sheep is “baaa”, very different from his usual ba’s.  “Dada?” means please look at what I’m holding and tell me what it is.  He even knows when it’s appropriate to wave bye-bye, as in he won’t wave to the doorman until the elevator doors start to close.  He also knows everyone in his daycare class by name, except for Milin who just started last week.

Rowan is intensely interested in knowing the name of everything, and his little eyebrows furrow whenever he’s confused.  The other day we were in the bookstore, and I was explaining all his da’s to him, when I noticed that a little girl who was there with her nanny was listening in on our conversation.  So I started including her in the chat, and before I knew it, the little girl, who was a year or two older than Rowan and obviously already walking, got down on her hands and knees and started crawling around following him.  He was very confused as to who this creature was, but took it all in stride and kept pointing at her and going da.  Now I have to teach him it’s not polite to point at other people!

The most exciting thing in Rowan’s life is buses.  Good thing there’s always one just around the corner!

.

Mommy apologizes for the lag between posts.  Having a fulltime job means I want to spend every remaining moment I have with Rowan, and that leaves little time for anything that’s not absolutely vital.  But I love sharing his life with those who care about him, so I’ll try to keep it up as much as possible.
