I suppose it happens to every working parent. Rowan hit a major milestone, and neither Mommy nor Daddy was around to witness it. Last Tuesday he rolled over for the first time! The babysitter was very excited about it, and we were quite bummed to have missed it.
Mommy is also quite worried about daycare, which starts next month. Will it change her sweet baby? Who will tell her when he acquires a new skill or does something for the first time? How will they know what his different cries mean, or notice if they change? I know most kids who go to daycare turn out just fine, and that all their parents went through nightmares scenarios in the middle of the night, but somehow that just doesn’t help.
But on the upside, Rowan’s first tooth is coming in nicely. The others are still in hiding and he seems to be teething. He doesn’t like milk so much anymore, and it’s hard to fill him with enough solids to keep him full through the night, so we’ve had a few 3am wake up calls from his tummy. And the teething may also be causing nightmares. For the first time ever he cried in the middle of the night for something other than food. A few lullabies later he went back to sleep, but it was so unusual for him that it’s worth noticing.
He’s also changing his sleep patterns and tries very hard to avoid an afternoon nap. Which of course makes him grumpy by 5pm and asleep by six. Mommy is worried that if this continues, he’ll be asleep by the time she gets home from work.
The new sleep habit also made for the world’s shortest party. We spent all of 5 minutes at Gillis and Alex’s, just long enough for Rowan to tell everyone how unhappy he was. But by the time we got back to our building, he was cooing happily and playing with the doorman. And fell asleep as soon as we got home. We are also at the moment missing Brigitte’s housewarming since he pooped out and was bathed and asleep well before six. Is it wrong to give coffee to a baby?
None of these are complaints though. They’re just descriptions of Rowan’s life at the moment. Daddy and Mommy take each day (and cry and giggle and poop and smile) as they come. And we are grateful for every one of them.
