It’s been a very busy time in the world of Rowan. The little legs are learning how to get around, the little brain is learning all kids of new words, and the little laughs keep getting bigger and bigger.
Our latest routine is to let Rowan push the stroller home from daycare (at least until we hit the first traffic light). Which means he gets a good quarter mile every day. He can’t see above the stroller, so all other people see is this blue stroller making its way towards them, and all I see is his little rump moving side to side as he toddles along.
His mind is getting plenty of exercise too. The other day he was in the bedroom and pointed to the baby monitor. “That’s a monitor.” “Mo.” So now everything with a motor is “mo”. If we hear a car outside the window “mo mo”. Air conditioner comes on, “mo mo.” Thunder last night, “mo mo.” I guess that’s one of nature’s motors.
The language skills are also coming along nicely. One of the best investments we made was to a baby sign language video. I didn’t realize how useful it would be until earlier this week when Rowan was refusing his oatmeal and suddenly started making the sign for cereal. Followed by milk. Though it has its downfalls — every time he doesn’t want his dinner he tells us he wants a cracker instead. We’ve also told he daycare staff what the signs mean, so now they know that he wants water when he puts a finger to his chin, etc.
The “unofficial” signs we’ve come up with include spin spin spin for a helicopter or fan, flap flap for wings, and back and forth for circle. It’s been really amazing to watch.
But after all this learning we’re all ready for a vacation. Mommy has been working very hard to get her things done in the office and feels guilty about being away so much. But Daddy assures her that, despite being waved off with a smile and a wave when she leaves as opposed to a sincere bawling if Daddy so much as goes into the bathroom, Rowan does indeed miss her and whenever he comes home goes around the house calling mumumum.

But when both parents are around, it’s all packaged fun

Throw in the cats, though, and . . .
